WhalerLand open at Newington Arena
by posted 04/12/2018

The 21st century version Hartford Whalers have  a new ally: Whaler Land has opened in Newington, and will be expanding in the summer.

Whaler Land is a store within the 2-rink Newington Arena.  Whaler Land sells an abundance of gear for Hartford area sports: Old-School New England Whalers tee shirts, including those with "Pucky" the whale and the retro "harpoon" logo adorn the clothing racks in Whaler Land.

Adults who were in Connecticut when the Whalers were playing can view posters of past teams on the Whaler Land walls while this children can play a game of table hockey.

"Children are somehow interested in the team.  Some are fascinated when we play old time Whalers videos", says Mark Stewart, who is a co-founder of Whaler Land.  The store is open on Saturdays, when Newington Arena holds free skate times for kids and parents, and by appointment.

Whaler Land supports an overall mission: to bring an NHL team back to Hartford.  "We want more and more fans of hockey to wear shirts and hats this summer to show the support for relocating a team is real", says EJ Devokaitis.  "Devoted Devo" is another who is working to bring back a 21st century Whalers.

Ultimately, swarms of sports lovers who'd like to see a major league franchise return to Hartford are meant to lure a Billionaire owner to bring him team here.  Stewart chimes in here: "What better to do with $350 mil than majority ownership that gets you into the best club around - the 32 owners of the most international game among the four big sports!"

Their Linked-in campaign, to find that billionaire, a bit sultry, started this month.  Whaler Land's merchandise is available at www.NHLtoHartford.org.  The store features "all things Whalers", including their new clothing with the slogan "Make Connecticut SKATE Again."

Whaler Land holds an on-ice and off-ice event May 5 featuring a skating mascot and games for children.  Parents can register for the event on Event Brite at
